TSP close for Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026

Stocks had a strong day across the board, and no TSP fund fell. The G Fund barely budged, the F Fund edged up, and the three stock funds all gained more than 1%.

Individual funds

The S Fund led at $118.7782, up 2.31%. That is the biggest one-day move on the board. It is up 3.53% over five days and 16.83% year to date, the best year-to-date figure among the individual funds. The S Fund follows the Dow Jones U.S. Completion index, which covers mid-sized and smaller companies outside the S&P 500.

The C Fund closed at $124.5855, up 1.79%. That matches the S&P 500's 1.79% gain, which is what you would expect from a fund that tracks that index. Its five-day gain is 4.16% and its year-to-date return is 13.52%.

The I Fund rose 1.36% to $65.0801, tracking the MSCI ACWI ex-US ex-China benchmark. It has gained 4.01% over five days and 16.15% this year.

The F Fund rose 0.41% to $20.8985, in line with the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate benchmark. It is up just 0.05% over five days and 0.18% for the year. The G Fund gained 0.01% to $20.1015. It follows a Treasury rate rather than market prices, so it moves in tiny steps. It is up 2.6% this year.

Moves over 1%

Three funds cleared that mark: the S Fund (+2.31%), the C Fund (+1.79%) and the I Fund (+1.36%). There were no drops of any size.

L Funds

The L Funds blend the five core funds, so their gains follow how much stock each one holds. L 2055 through L 2075 all rose 1.69%, the same as the C Fund. L 2050 gained 1.43%, L 2045 1.34%, L 2040 1.26% and L 2035 1.16%. L 2030 was just under the line at 0.96%, and L Income, the most conservative mix, rose 0.51%. Year to date, the longest-dated funds sit near 14.8% and L Income at 5.9%.

What moved IRA index funds and ETFs

The index figures below were labeled as the prior session's close. They line up closely with the TSP results.

  • S&P 500: 7,736.52, up 1.79%
  • Dow Jones Industrial Average: 54,085.88, up 1.71%
  • Nasdaq Composite: 26,584.99, up 2.59%

The Nasdaq led the major indexes, which points to strength in growth-oriented companies.

The broad ETFs followed. Vanguard Total Stock Market (VTI) rose 1.87% to $380.82. Vanguard Total International Stock (VXUS) gained 1.68% to $86.45. Vanguard Total Bond Market (BND) added 0.40% to $72.44, nearly identical to the F Fund's 0.41%.

The 10-year Treasury yield slipped 1.26% to 4.627%. That works out to about six basis points. Bond prices rise when yields fall, which fits the modest gains in BND and the F Fund.

What it means for your plan

A day like this looks good, but one session rarely changes a long-term plan. The five-day numbers show the recent run: C at 4.16%, I at 4.01% and S at 3.53%. Markets can give some of that back just as quickly, and the F Fund's 0.18% year-to-date return is a reminder that different parts of a portfolio take turns leading.

If you hold an L Fund or a broad index fund, the mix already adjusts for you. If you are checking balances today, remember that a gain of nearly 2% on a Tuesday does not mean much for a plan built over decades. Contribute steadily and review your allocation on your own schedule, not on a single day's headlines.
