TSP funds at the Monday close
Every TSP fund finished higher on Monday, June 29. The stock funds did most of the lifting, while the bond and government funds barely moved.
The C Fund gained 1.19% to $119.7407. That was the only fund to clear 1% on the day, so it is the notable spike. The C Fund follows the S&P 500, so a move like this means large U.S. companies were broadly higher. Even with the jump, it is still down 0.41% over five days, and it is up 9.11% for the year.
The S Fund rose 1.00% to $117.9580, right at the 1% line. It tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Completion index, which covers mid-sized and smaller U.S. companies outside the S&P 500. It has the best five-day record of the stock funds at +1.66%, and its 16.02% year-to-date gain is the highest on the board.
The I Fund added 0.63% to $64.3313. It follows the MSCI ACWI ex-US ex-China index, so it reflects stocks outside the U.S. and China. Its five-day number is the weakest of the group at -2.13%, so Monday's gain only took a small bite out of a rough week. It is still up 14.82% this year.
The quiet funds
The F Fund edged up 0.05% to $21.1239. It follows the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate bond index, and bonds tend to move in small steps. Its five-day gain is 0.79%, and it is up 1.26% for the year.
The G Fund rose 0.04% to $20.0117. It pays a Treasury-based rate and does not swing with markets, so it just keeps adding. It is up 2.14% year to date.
L Funds
The L Funds are blends of the individual funds, so their results follow the mix. The longer the time horizon, the more stock exposure, and the bigger Monday's gain.
- L 2055, 2060, 2065, 2070 and 2075 each gained 0.96%, with five-day moves of -0.73% and year-to-date gains of 11.95%.
- L 2050 rose 0.80%, L 2045 rose 0.75%, and L 2040 rose 0.71%.
- L 2035 rose 0.65%, and L 2030 rose 0.55%.
- L Income, the most conservative blend, rose 0.30% and is up 4.87% for the year.
None of the L Funds topped 1%, because the bond and G Fund holdings held back the C Fund's bigger gain.
What moved IRA index funds and ETFs
The one IRA-related reading I have is the Nasdaq Composite, which closed at 25,820.141, up 2.06%. That figure is from the prior session's close, so it is background and not a same-day match to the TSP numbers above.
Still, a 2% jump is large. IRA holdings that follow the Nasdaq or lean on big technology companies likely saw the sharpest gains. Broad S&P 500 funds would have gained less, in line with the C Fund's pattern. I do not have fund-level ETF data in this recap, so I will not guess at individual products.
What it means for your plan
One day of gains does not change much. Monday's rise sits against five-day declines in the C Fund, I Fund and most L Funds, and the stock funds are still well up for the year. A good day and a bad day look about the same in a decade-long record.
If you contribute every pay period, you are buying through both kinds of days. That regular habit matters far more than the headline of any single session. This recap is general information, not advice for your situation, so check your own timeline and goals before making changes.
