TSP funds at the Friday close
Most TSP funds finished the week with a small gain, though the week as a whole was a down one. The standout was the S Fund, which rose 1.01% to $99.5570. That is the only move over 1% in the lineup.
The C Fund added 0.14% to $107.4227. It tracks the S&P 500, so a modest gain fits a broad large-company benchmark that moved only a little. The I Fund rose 0.13% to $53.1028. It follows the MSCI ACWI ex-US ex-China index, so it reflects foreign stocks outside China, and it is still up 26.64% for the year, the best of the individual funds.
The F Fund slipped 0.03% to $20.8087. It follows the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate bond index, and a small dip in a bond fund usually means bond prices eased slightly. The G Fund gained 0.01% to $19.4676. It pays a Treasury-based rate and does not swing with markets, so a tiny, steady gain is its normal behavior.
The S Fund spike
The S Fund follows the Dow Jones U.S. Completion index, which covers mid-sized and smaller U.S. companies outside the S&P 500. A 1.01% day is large next to the 0.14% for the C Fund. The data I have does not say what drove the gap, so I won't guess. Keep the context in view, though: the S Fund is still down 1.81% over five days, the weakest of the group. Friday recovered some ground but not all of it.
The L Funds
The L Funds blend the five core funds, so they land between their parts. Funds with later dates hold more stock and gained more on the day. L 2055 through L 2075 each rose 0.24%, L 2040 rose 0.18%, and L 2030 rose 0.15%. L Income, which leans on the G and F Funds, gained 0.07%.
The five-day numbers run the same way. L Income is down 0.33% and L 2030 down 0.8%, while L 2055 and later are down 1.4%. One oddity: L 2075 shows a year-to-date return of 8.02%, far below the 18.75% to 18.77% of its neighbors. It stands apart from the rest of the family, so check the fund's start date before comparing it with the others.
IRA index funds and ETFs
One caution first: the index and ETF figures below are from the prior session's close, so they won't line up perfectly with the TSP numbers above.
The S&P 500 rose 0.13% to 6,728.8, and the Dow gained 0.16% to 46,987.10. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.21% to 23,004.54, so technology-heavy stocks lagged while the broader market edged up.
That split shows in the ETFs. Vanguard Total Stock Market (VTI) rose 0.22% to $330.09, and Vanguard Total International (VXUS) rose 0.19% to $74.20. On the bond side, Vanguard Total Bond Market (BND) dipped 0.05% to $74.33. The 10-year Treasury yield held at 4.093%, unchanged on the day, which fits a bond fund that barely moved.
What it means for your plan
A Friday gain after a down week is a footnote, not a signal. The C Fund is still 1.61% lower over five days, and the S Fund 1.81%, but both remain well ahead for the year. Daily moves like the S Fund's 1% jump make headlines, but one day rarely matters for a plan built over decades.
If you hold a mix of funds or a L Fund, your results will look calmer than any single stock fund. That is how those funds are built. Check your allocation against your own timeline and goals when you normally review your account, not because of one session. This recap is general information, not personal advice.
